We’ve been helping young people create real art and express their own true stories for 33 years. The theme for Creative Art Works' 2019 Benefit for Kids was Real Art | True Stories, and on April 11th, that theme came to life in many ways that were enjoyed by 350 CAW guests.
CAW offers our heartfelt thanks to all of our sponsors and donors who contributed over $770,000 to make our 2019 Benefit such a success! This critical funding will allow CAW to bring vital arts programs to thousands of NYC youth in the coming year.
This year’s honorees were all very deserving, and we want to thank them: John Maher, Executive Vice President of CBRE; Donald Notice, Executive Director of West Harlem Group Assistance; and our Youth Honoree, Denisha Wright.
Thanks to our Host Committee for their tireless fund-raising efforts, in particular John for his selfless leadership and generosity. Thanks to Rockefeller Group for providing the beautifully redeveloped lobby of 1271 Lexington Avenue.
Our guests and friends were glowing as they met our staff, our teaching artists, our students and our Youth Apprentices. They gleefully made original art books, or participated in a colorful community print project inspired by the Fritz Glarner mural that graces one end of the lobby. Our guests took a deep dive into the 300+ works of art on display in our student art gallery and many, inspired by what they saw, engaged in thoughtful dialogue with our awesome young curators.
There is no shortage of need for the services we provide so, please, if you have not yet contributed, we still welcome you to do so. With your generous support, Creative Art Works can bring genuine, fresh, relevant, and necessary art-making programs to young people across New York City.

Learning Life Skills
“CAW helps children learn a process that will sustain them for the rest of their lives, whether they do art or science or come into the real estate business… These kids aspire to do something more [and] the skills CAW’s art educators teach them help them achieve the things they want to do. They create a plan, they fail, they get back up, they create. That’s what makes our world a better place. To me, that’s the best life skills that anybody can have.”
-- John P. Maher, 2019 Honoree
A Taste of the Experience
Making a Gorgeous Glarner
A giant mural by the American abstract artist Fritz Glarner graces the east end of the historic lobby of 1271 Avenue of the Americas. We invited guests to participate in a community printing project inspired by this recently restored mid-century masterwork.
One for the Books
Our book-making project turned out to be a huge hit. Guests were invited to experience a mini-class inspired by a unit from one of our after-school programs. Read the short blog about the book-making program HERE. Download a PDF of illustrated instructions on how to make your own accordion book at home HERE.
The Highlight of My Evening…
“The highlight of my evening was the surprise attendance of this young man, an alum and dear friend, who came to the Benefit, because he wanted others to know how important we were in his life.”
— CAW Executive Director Brian Ricklin
