This spring, 130 underclassmen studying constitutional and trial law participated in an integrated digital arts program with Creative Art Works. Using cartography and data to examine racist federal and state housing laws, such as redlining and eminent domain, students explored the differences between de facto and de jure segregation in America at large and specifically in New York City. Through the use of online photo-editing programs, students created seemingly abstract layers of digital art that, when peeled back, reveal maps representing their neighborhoods color-coded to project their own emotions, feelings and identity. We are excited to join with the school community in a remote celebration of these students and their thought-provoking artwork!

Esta primavera, 130 estudiantes que estudian derecho constitucional y judicial en la Escuela Secundaria de Derecho y Servicio Público participaron en un programa integrado de arte digital con CAW. A través del estudio de cartografía combinada con datos, los estudiantes exploraron las diferencias entre la segregación “de facto” y “de jure” en los Estados Unidos y específicamente en la ciudad de Nueva York, al examinar leyes racistas de vivienda federales y estatales como las líneas rojas y el dominio eminente. Mediante el uso de programas de edición de fotografías, los estudiantes crearon capas aparentemente abstractas de arte digital que, cuando se retiran, presentan mapas representativos de sus vecindarios en Manhattan o mapas personales para proyectar emociones, sentimientos e identidad. ¡Estamos contentos de unirnos con la comunidad escolar en una celebración remota de estos estudiantes y sus obras de arte que nos invitan a pensar!
