Noormah Jamal

Teaching Artist

Noormah Jamal is a Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary visual artist known for work that explores identity, memory, and personal as well as collective experience through painting, drawing, ceramics, and sculpture. Her practice often draws on the oral histories of her family and community, blending symbolism, color, and narrative to investigate emotional and sociopolitical themes.

Prior to joining Creative Art Works, Noormah was a Teaching Resident with the Children’s Museum of the Arts in New York from 2023–24 and a Teaching Artist Resident at ProjectArt during the same period. She has also worked as an Artist Mentor at COLABS Creative Collective in Lahore, Pakistan. She is currently a studio member at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in Manhattan.

Noormah’s teaching practice emphasizes inclusivity, independent artistic development, and cultural affirmation, particularly through her work with asylum-seeking families, English language learners, and youth from diverse learning backgrounds.

In 2025, Noormah presented "Meena/Veena," a major solo exhibition at Rajiv Menon Contemporary in Los Angeles.

She was recently a finalist for the 2024 Sovereign Asian Art Prize, an international recognition that places her among leading contemporary artists engaging with Asian cultural narratives. In the same year, she was nominated for the Joan Mitchell Fellowship.

Her work has been included in curated group exhibitions and art fairs such as "Body Freedom Every(body)" in collaboration with Times Square Arts, "Power/Play" at 12 Gates Arts, Zona Maco (2026), Untitled Miami (2025), and NADA Miami (2024). Earlier in her career, Noormah earned the Imran Mir Art Prize in 2019 and participated in artist residencies including VASL in Karachi.

She holds an MFA in painting and drawing from Pratt Institute (2023), where she was awarded multiple scholarships for outstanding academic achievement, and a BFA in Mughal miniature painting from the National College of Arts, Lahore (2016).
