Orchid Sylvester

Meet Orchid Sylvester, a 19 year old Brooklyn artist whose work centers on the vulnerability that comes with the human condition. Although her personal projects explore human vulnerability with narrative horror elements (which you can learn more about on orchidesyl.com), her engagement with her community takes an optimistic view of vulnerability as strength and unity. Orchid has received a plethora of support from working artists, while earning artistic opportunities within the community during her time attending school in Newark, NJ, and believes in the fundamental importance of giving back to communities so everyone can create, learn, and grow in sincere and respected spaces.

Orchid is currently in her sophomore year, getting a BFA from Cooper Union with a focus on design, print, and film. In her last year of high school and her first year of college, Orchid undertook a personal journey of learning more about her cultural history tied to Grenada, Trinidad, and the histories that exist in the past and present. Being able to work with CAW for the first time in Summer 2021 brought Orchid back to the allure of accessible and approachable design processes while also incorporating histories which can be addressed by activism, awareness, and calls to action.
