Nicholas Aroca Character Design Portfolio

About the Artist

Nicholas R. Aroca is a senior at the Urban Assembly Gateway School for Technology, currently in the character design internship program, brought to life thanks to Creative Art Works and FunPlus. He has prior art experience in sprite art and animations. He's learned a lot about character design thanks to the program, such as the importance of a silhouette and color choice in a design, and how shapes can be used to develop new ideas and blueprints.

He was born in Manhattan and raised in Brooklyn, New York. His inspirations for his artwork comes from the different forms of media he enjoys, such as video games and tv shows. He especially takes influences from the Sonic the Hedgehog series and cartoons such as Regular Show and Ren and Stimpy.

Sketch

Larry-Leonard is a beach-loving, thrill-seeking poser who really wants to get all the ladies and really wants to be seen as all of that and a bag of chips. Unfortunately, nobody is buying it, and his belief in his own entitlement to coolness thanks to his one buff arm is invalid. He got that arm one day when he was still in high school, when he accidentally fell down the escalators, and continued to palpitate his arm until he was able to press the stop button. He doesn't work out, but he imagined he'd be able to leave school quickly with his golden arm. Unfortunately, he got laughed off social medias due to jokes regarding his massive arm. It got so bad, he moved away from his hometown in Nebraska to some skatepark in The Bronx. That’s when he fell in love with skate culture. Too bad his slothfulness and laziness made him not actually learn to skate. He stole a busted-up board from some hobo and fixed it up to look ridable. He also spends what little money he owns on McDonalds. He's a felon, caught stealing Cheetos. He also enjoys taking drugs that improves his arm's survivability. As that’s the only piece of identity he has left. He listens to Adult Swim's D-Code because he saw it on an ad one time. He is illiterate, and is scared of hot Cheetos. His biggest nightmare is being discovered as a sham. How long can he keep the charade going?
